Emergency
Before trying everything, if you’re unable to get back your keys, you should wait for a help if it’s safe in this area. If not (like you’re stuck in the woods or a jungle or somewhere like that), don’t waste your time, grab something hard like a rock, if you don’t find one, punch your car door window as hard you can and try to break it open and get out of the location.
Call for a Help Roadside Assistance or a Locksmith
If you’re a AAA member or you have a roadside assistance by your insurance, use it. If not, you call a locksmith or roadside assistance who is a professional. He will safely be able to unlock your car door with power locks. If you try to do anything by yourself, you may end up damaging you car.
Unlocking with a Slim Jim
This method is not recommended for modern cars with complex security systems or any cars, try to avoid it. It can damage the car’s interior and it is best to hand over this job to a professional.
If you’re stuck in the woods or in a place where help may take so long to reach you and there’s no shop or readside assistance nearby, and you’re feeling unsafe outside the car, you can go for it. Otherwise, you should’ve wait for an assistance and not damaging your car. Get a slim jim, a long thin metal tool from somewhere if you can. Insert it between the door frame and try to maneuver it to reach the door lock system. This is a little complex and require patience to not scratch on your car. But this will definitely damage your car.
Reaching Through the Window
If you’re unable to find any metal or something like that, try to find something like a coat hangar or similar tool to pry open the top corner of your car’s window frame. This will create a gap so that we will be able to reach your keys. This method is very risky and can shatter or break your car window and cut your arms.
Before attempting any DIY methods, consult your car’s manual to see if there are any manufacturer-recommended procedures for unlocking.
Here’s how you can avoid getting locked again
- Keep a spare key somewhere hidden like a magnetic box.
- Program your phone number into your car’s infotainment system for roadside assistance calls.
- Develop a habit of double-checking that your keys are in your pocket or bag before locking the car.
Save this guide and you’ll be prepared for any lockout situation like that. It’s best to handover the job to the professionals if you don’t have an idea. But for emergency situations like I said before, you have to save your life first, there’s nothing important than your life. You can repair your car’s door window, not get back your life if you loose once. Priorotize yourself in every situation. Another emergency might happen in the winter.
